In this webinar we presented a case-based approach to evaluating immunocompromised travelers returning from South America, the Middle East, and Asia, with syndromes such as fever, rash, skin lesions, etc, focusing on locally prevalent arbovirus infections, bacterial and parasitic infections.

Participants reviewed region-specific and country-specific epidemiologic risks, differential diagnoses, practical approaches to diagnosis in non-endemic settings, treatment, and prevention.

Emphasis will be placed on how clinical presentation, diagnosis, prevention, and management of these travel-related infections might differ in immunocompromised populations (SOT/HCT/B-cell depletion) compared with immunocompetent travelers.

Learning Objectives

• Differentiate the epidemiology, clinical manifestations, and diagnostic approach to key travel-related infections in immunocompromised travelers returning from South America, the Middle East, and Asia, with consideration of specific immunocompromised populations
• Develop region-specific differential diagnoses for fever and common post-travel syndromes.
• Apply evidence-based strategies for prevention, diagnostic evaluation, and management of travel-associated infections in immunocompromised.

Faculty:

Maha Alamri, MBBS, MSCI: Dr. Maha Alamri is a Transplant Infectious Disease Consultant at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center (KFHRC), in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Gustavo Méndez, MD: Dr. Gustavo Méndez the is Head of the Department of Internal Medicine and staff physician of the Infectious Diseases Service of the Hospital Escuela de Agudos Dr. Ramón Madariaga de Posadas, Misiones, Argentina. He is a professor of Infectious Diseases at the Faculty of Medicine of the Catholic University of the Missions (UCAMI). He is a specialist in Infectious Diseases from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA), Argentina.

Malgorzata Mikulska, MD, PhD, FESCMID, FECMM: Dr. Mikulska is an Associate Professor of Infectious Diseases at the University of Genova and a consultant at IRCCS Ospedale Policlinico San Martino in Italy. Dr. Mikulska is a highly accomplished researcher with over 300 publications and an H-index of 54. Her work focuses on infections in immunocompromised patients, particularly those with hematologic disorders and stem cell transplants, as well as invasive fungal infections. She is also an active contributor to numerous additional international scientific societies.

Claudia Cristina Salgueira, MD: Dr. Claudia Salgueira is a faculty member in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Infection Control at Sanatorio Anchorena and Sanatorio Trinidad Mitre in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Her work focuses on infectious complications in patients with hematologic malignancies and hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients, with leadership contributions to the Argentinian Society of Infectious Diseases.

Ban Hock Tan MBBS, (Singapore), MRCP (UK): Dr. Tan is a Senior Consultant in Infectious Diseases and Chief Quality Officer at Singapore General Hospital. A highly regarded leader in transplant infectious diseases, he played a key role in establishing the hospital’s Infectious Diseases department and advancing care for immunocompromised patients. He is a Clinical Professor at Duke-NUS Medical School and has held international leadership roles, including past president of the Transplant Infectious Disease Section of The Transplantation Society. His clinical expertise includes transplant infectious diseases, febrile neutropenia, and invasive fungal infections, and he has been recognized with national awards for clinical excellence and contributions to patient safety.

Siriorn Watcharananan, MD, FIDSA: Dr. Siriorn Watcharananan is an infectious disease specialist and Associate Professor of Medicine, Division of Infectious Disease, Department of Medicine at the Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand.
